Industrial robots are essential for modern manufacturing, but manufacturing output doesn’t always match automation levels. For example, China is the world’s largest manufacturing nation, but it only has the 15th highest industrial robot density (187 per 10,000 workers). These were the 10 most automated countries in 2019 according to the International Federation of Robotics.
The 10 most automated countries in the world
The International Federation of Robotics defines robot density as, “the number of operational industrial robots relative to the number of employees.” Their report indicates the number of installed units per 10,000 workers. The world averages 113 units per 10,000 workers.
Singapore had the highest robot density in the world with 918 units for every 10,000 employees. 75% of the total robots in Singapore are used in electronics manufacturing.
South Korea was the second most automated country in the world with 868 operational industrial robots per 10,000 workers. Like Singapore South Korea has a large electronics industry. They are also a major producer of vehicles and batteries.
No country comes close to the level of automation in Singapore and South Korea. Japan had the third highest robot density with less than half as many robots per 10,000 workers compared to South Korea (Japan had 364 robots per 10,000 employees).
Germany had the fourth highest robot density in 2019 with 346 units per 10,000 workers. They are the largest robot market in Europe.
Sweden had a robot density of 274 units for every 10,000 workers; 35% of these units are in the metal industry, and 35% are in the automotive industry.
Denmark had the 6th highest robot density with 243 units per 10,000 employees.
Hong Kong was just behind Denmark with 242 robots for every 10,000 workers.
Chinese Taipei had the 8th highest robot density with 234 units for 10,000 workers.
The United States ranked 9th in the world for robot density. U.S. manufacturers operate 228 industrial robots for every 10,000 workers. The American auto industry is second only to China in production volume of cars and light vehicles.
Belgium and Luxembourg had the 10th highest robot density with 214 units per 10,000 employees.
