Indramat error code E831 is also known as “Position limit reached during jog.” Jogging happens when a motor is moved in short bursts to reach a position, rather than smoothly moving the element from one point to another. The drive has a particular position it’s aiming for. When the movement reaches the limit, or is prepared to go past the limit, the movement has to stop.
Basically, E831 indicates a communication fault between the drive and control units. This error commonly occurs due to issues with cabling, connectors, or configuration settings. When the communication link is disrupted, it can result in a loss of control and impair the overall performance of the system.
Check Physical Connections
Inspect the cables and connectors between the drive and control units for any signs of damage, looseness, or disconnection. Ensure that all connections are securely plugged in and properly seated. If any cables or connectors appear faulty, replace them with known good components.
Verify Configuration Settings
Review the configuration settings of both the drive and control units to ensure they are correctly set. Pay close attention to parameters related to communication protocols, addresses, baud rates, and data formats. Make any necessary adjustments to align the settings between the drive and control units. Turn off the position limit monitor if it is causing the movement to stop unnecessarily, but watch out for dangerous movements.
Restart the System
Power off the entire system, including the drive, control unit, and any associated components. Allow a brief pause before powering on the system again. Perform a cold start-up of the system, following the proper sequence and procedures outlined in the manufacturer’s documentation.

Sometimes you can’t take care of everything yourself. Sometimes, let’s face it, you can spend so much time on trial and error and troubleshooting that the cost of downtime eclipses any savings you might have gotten from DIY. Chances are good that your Indramat systems are older at this point than most of your engineers, and they break down so rarely that nobody on the floor has experience troubleshooting them.
We have that experience. If your problem can be solved over the phone, we’ll take care of it. If you need factory repair, reman, or replacement, we can take care of that, too.
