Are Rexroth and Indramat the Same Thing?

The whole Rexroth, Indramat thing can be a bit confusing at times. You may see “Indramat” stamped on your legacy servo motor or drive, or maybe you just see “Rexroth”. Then again, you might see both of these names on your machinery or in the project planning manual. Maybe some parts of your motion control system are Indramat and some read “Rexroth Indramat” on the plate. There’s a simple explanation why these names sometimes appear to be interchangeable, and you go to the same place when you need troubleshooting support.

Are Rexroth and Indramat the same company?

Short, sweet, and simple — the answer is, yes. However, there is a bit of nuance to the story. Knowing the history behind the company gives you the context to understand why there’s confusion at times.

Originally, Indramat and Rexroth were two different companies.

Rexroth has roots that date back well over 200 years. In 1795, the Rexroth family started an iron forge in present day Heimbuchenthal, Germany. They’ve been a leader in manufacturing and industry ever since.

Indramat GmbH got its start in 1958 in Neuwied (am Rhein), Germany. It didn’t take long for Rexroth to notice their innovative and versatile servo drives and motion controls, and Rexroth acquired Indramat in 1965.

Indramat continued producing high quality, durable, and innovative motion control products. The company is best known for introducing their brushless AC servo motor in 1979. This was the world’s first maintenance free servo, and it quickly became the industry standard.

The Indramat name stopped being used in 2001 when Robert Bosch GmbH acquired Rexroth. The company became known as Bosch Rexroth, and Indramat became the Electric Drives and Controls Technology Group under Bosch Rexroth.

Who services Indramat products today?

Although the Indramat name is no longer used, Bosch Rexroth still provides service and support for Indramat motion control products. Indramat products are legacy, which means that the manufacturer does not make them any more.
