Don’t Make a Resolution This Year

According to U.S. News and World Report, 80% of people who make New Year’s resolutions give up on them, and most people abandon their new goals for the new year less than two months in. The best way to guarantee that you don’t fail in meeting your New Year’s resolution is by not making a resolution in the first place.

The trouble with resolutions

One of the issues with resolutions is that people get a little carried away. Jim didn’t finish a book from cover to cover last year, but decides to read one book a month this year. Joe, who happily lives a sedentary life, decides that he is going to run every single day beginning January 1st. Jenny, a smoker of 30 years, makes a resolution to quit cold turkey.

All of these things are possible, but it’s not likely that they will happen.

The other problem with New Year’s resolutions is that there’s the unspoken understanding that these annual declarations of positive life change are going to be temporary. Nobody checks in to make sure that you are sticking to your commitment, you won’t be harassed for giving up by the 20% of people who actually see their resolutions through, and you get to try again next year.

Making a New Year’s resolution is an exciting holiday tradition to take part in; in the same way that you don’t sing Christmas carols the entire year, you abide by your resolution for as long as the season allows.

Actually take action

That’s not to say that you shouldn’t make improvements in your life. In spirit, making a New Year’s resolution is both positive and admirable. It’s an attempt to improve your life or better the world around you in some way.

However, instead of making a New Year’s resolution that you will undoubtedly give up on, take real actions that will make a lasting difference.
