The Future of Servos

Indramat servo drives and servo motors revolutionized the motion control industry nearly 60 years ago. Now, the company is no longer known as Indramat, but servos are still instrumental in manufacturing, and a recent report predicts that servo drives and servo motors will become even more important over the next 5 years.

Servo motors are used in motion control systems found in manufacturing, packaging, printing, and other industrial sectors. What made servos so revolutionary nearly six decades ago, and what makes them great still today, is the versatility, energy efficiency, low maintenance cost, and high performance that they deliver.

It’s those advantages of servos that will probably drive the demand over the next few years. According to the report, increasing electricity costs and increasing environmental and energy usage standards in factories will lead to an increase in the servo market. This includes servo motors, servo drives, and servo controls. Since servo motors are more energy efficient than other electrical motors, more factories will be making the switch to servos, replacing their less efficient motors.

The predicted increase in demand is primarily associated with Asian countries like China, Japan, and South Korea, as the Asian Pacific holds the largest market for servos (roughly 40% of the entire global market). The demand or servos is expected to grow in North America as well as in Europe, although at a much slower pace than the Asian nations.
