People sometimes get confused about the whole Indramat and Rexroth thing. They see drives, controls, and motors labeled as “Rexroth Indramat”. Maybe their servo motor clearly says Indramat on it, but they distinctly remember contacting Rexroth for support in the past. And then there’s the fact that Rexroth isn’t Rexroth anymore; it’s Bosch Rexroth. So is it Indramat, is it Rexroth, or is it Bosch Rexroth?
It may seem confusing at first, but there’s a simple explanation. Here’s a snappy little timeline to help you make sense of the relationship between Indramat and Rexroth.
The Indramat and Rexroth connection
Indramat began producing industrial motion control products in 1958. Indramat servos were revolutionary then, and they are still widely used today.
Rexroth acquired Indramat in 1965. The company continued producing drives, motors, and controls under the Indramat name for three and a half decades.
Indramat solidifies its place in history with the release of the brushless “AC Servo” drive system in 1979.
Rexroth is taken over in 2001, and becomes Bosch Rexroth. Indramat becomes Bosch Rexroth’s “Electric Drives and Control Technology Group”, but the Indramat name is no longer used for motion control products.
Today, the Indradrive series from Bosch Rexroth pays homage to the Indramat legacy.
Don’t be confused!
In a nutshell, Indramat started out as its own company, it was acquired by Rexroth, and it is owned today by Bosch Rexroth. In fact, Bosch Rexroth still supports Indramat products.
Anyone who is experienced with Indramat motion control systems has a good sense of the company’s history. They won’t get thrown off by the added “Rexroth”. If, however, you talk to a third party servo repair shop and they ask, “Wait, so is it a Rexroth motor or an Indramat motor?” this should be a clear red flag.
